An animated, cited guide for students, patients and caregivers. Educational only, not medical advice. Your place is saved on this device.

Not medical adviceAlzheimer's Companion is an educational synthesis of published literature for study, patient understanding and family caregivers. It does not replace a clinician. Doses and guideline statements are reported as published, not as instructions for any individual.

Part 3 · Treatment

Beyond memory

Agitation, low mood, apathy, suspicion and poor sleep are common in dementia. Published guidance starts with looking for the cause. Press play to follow one behaviour through the DICE approach.

Illustration of a published clinical-reasoning approach. No large trial has tested DICE itself.

Antipsychotics: the risk in 1,000 people

Antipsychotic medicines carry a boxed warning for older people with dementia. The figures below come from the class wording in current US labels, a meta-analysis, and a large study of US veterans.

Each dot is one person. Large filled dots are deaths. Rates from label class wording; counts per 1,000 are arithmetic from those rates.

The other published options and their evidence

What trials and regulators found for the other medicines studied for these symptoms. This is a summary of evidence, not a treatment plan. The only dose mentioned is a published caveat about one trial.

Medicines that can make thinking worse

Alzheimer's Companion is an educational synthesis of the published literature on Alzheimer's disease, made for health-science students, people living with the disease, and the families who care for them.

It is not medical advice. It cannot diagnose, and nothing here should change a treatment without your own clinician. Guideline doses are quoted as published. Please check the original sources, which are listed in full in the Sources module.

Part of Medical Companions, animated and cited guides to one disease each. Also there: Parkinson's Companion, a related guide to Parkinson's disease, the other common neurodegenerative disease, and FMF Companion, on Familial Mediterranean Fever.
