Parkinson's disease, explained

Parkinson's disease takes away the brain's dopamine slowly, for years before the first tremor. Here it is in moving pictures: follow dopamine from the substantia nigra to the striatum, watch alpha-synuclein fold and spread, run the diagnostic criteria yourself, see a day of levodopa doses in early and late disease, and look inside deep-brain stimulation.

Schematic. Synuclein spreads first, non-motor signs follow, and the movement signs come last.

For students

Every module has an Exam hook box and a citation trail. Finish with flashcards, mnemonics and a quiz.

For people with Parkinson's and families

Look for the In plain words boxes. Bring questions to your own clinician: the guide reports what guidelines and studies say, not what you should do.

How sure is each claim?
