An animated, cited guide for students, nurses, patients and families. Educational only, not medical advice. Your place is saved on this device.

Not medical adviceMyasthenia Gravis Companion is an educational synthesis of published literature for study and patient understanding. It does not replace a clinician. Doses, drug lists and guideline statements are reported as published, not as instructions for any individual. Sudden trouble breathing or swallowing is an emergency.

Part 3 · Treatment

Thymectomy over the years

Thymectomy removes the thymus, a gland behind the breastbone. Follow the MGTX trial month by month: muscle scores, prednisone doses and remission over 3 and 5 years. Press play, switch the gland view or the surgical approach, and extend the timeline to 5 years.

Published trial and guidance information only. Everything here reports what the MGTX trial, its extension and the consensus guidance published. Whether surgery suits a particular person, and when, is decided by the person with their neurologist and thoracic surgeon.

Anatomy is schematic, not to scale. Filled dots are printed trial values; open dots were read from the published figure and are approximate; lines between them are interpolated.

Who the guidance says it is for

The strongest evidence comes from one randomised trial in a narrow group: adults aged 18 to 65 with generalized, AChR-antibody-positive MG without a thymoma, within 5 years of onset. Outside that group, guidance rests on cohort studies and expert consensus. 381,552

Around the operation, thymoma, and the evidence on approach

Myasthenia Gravis Companion is an educational synthesis of the published literature on myasthenia gravis, made for health-science and nursing students and for patient understanding.

It is not medical advice. It cannot diagnose, and nothing here should change a treatment without your own clinician. Doses and drug lists are quoted as published. Please check the original sources, which are listed in full in the Sources module.

Part of Medical Companions, animated and cited guides to one disease each. Also there: Alzheimer's Companion and FMF Companion.
